Agriculture and rural development

Agriculture is a vital part of rural development, but not only in economic terms but also in social and cultural terms. Agriculture represents the most important activity of the majority of rural communities and greatly influences lifestyles of people in the rural Balkans.

Decades of neglect of agriculture and natural and demographic depletion of rural areas has resulted in a very negative economic and social downturn which has led to today's unfavorable situation. The most striking issue in rural development is the number of small and uncompetitive farms, of which a large number are elderly households, have fragmented agricultural land, small-scale plots, extensibility and low technological level of production, insufficient or inadequate use of agro-technical measures, low productivity, poor disposal of manure and agricultural waste, and so on. This results in low income generating opportunities and is not sustainable in the long term. A particular problem lies in the traditional structure of production and lack of organization of farmers, so that local communities have indigenous, recognizable and competitive products that could be successfully launched in the global market. This state of affairs at the same time causes great economic and structural disorders, such as depopulation, weed infestation and loss of function of agricultural land, economic and social degradation, loss of identity of local communities and exposure to adverse events, such as environmental degradation, devastation of cultural and traditional heritage, mishandling of the economy, corruption and so on.

Although the trend of declining population in rural areas is constant, the potential for development of agriculture in general and the potential for rural development in this region will remain at a high level. In order to revitalize rural areas and retain or attract a larger population, it is necessary to invest in their development, and on the first place in the infrastructure and facilities that the villages put in a competitive position with the cities.
